Food Day 2

A Second Helping

 


Food Day 2 is a follow-up event with two other classes also studying other food issues. The purpose of the day’s event will be to have students try to, together, come up with some solutions to food issues of hunger, sustainability and fairness.

Procedure

Three different classes will come together. Each class has been studying food issues from a different perspective. One class has studied food workers’ rights, one class has studied hunger and your class has studied sustainability and food. Together the classes will try to create some solutions to problems they have studied that also address the other class’s issues.

The discussions will take place in two rounds. The first round will be focused on discussing the needs and perspectives of the groups, while the second round will be focused on brainstorming and agreeing upon solutions.

During the discussion, it will be important that you effectively voice the needs and concerns from your perspective, but you also need to listen to the needs and perspectives of others, and seek a resolution on which all parties can agree.

You will be placed into teams of 3 with one member from each class, in preparation for the discussion, you should:

1)    Develop a very short opening statement and a fact sheet handout. This statement is meant to educate the other 2 members of your team on your issue (hunger), and the fact sheet (with sources) is meant to increase your ethos.

2)    Think about where the other team members might be coming from; and,

3)    Develop options to propose on your issue;


 

 

 

Discussion Procedures (in class, room OSW 203)

Step 1

We’ll begin with opening statements.

You may also ask questions about one another's opening statements.

After the opening statements, the formal discussions begin.

·         Begin by discussing the needs and perspectives of each group member. As you discuss, you should aim to learn what is important to the other group members and test this against what you thought they might bring to the discussions.

·         You also need to make sure that the other group members understand what is important to resolving your issue, instead of just making assumptions.

You should then try to identify points of commonality and points of difference.

Step 3
The second round is focused on brainstorming and agreeing upon solutions.

·         Once you understand one another's needs, begin to brainstorm options—"what ifs"—that might meet those needs.

·         Think about your priorities and identify the things you are willing to give up in order to get things that are more important.

·         To move toward resolution, the group will need to establish objective criteria to help decide what is "fair." In situations where it is impossible to fully satisfy the interests and needs of all group members on an issue, you will need to think of reasons why the group should select one solution rather than another, finding criteria of fairness agreeable to all group members.

At the end of the allotted time, write down any agreements you have reached and any points of disagreement that remain.

Step 4
After class today, please write a short reflection essay (1-2 pages). Please turn in the essay on Canvas. Reflect on what you learned from the negotiation process.
The purpose of the Reflection Paper is for you to reflect or think about what you learned from the Food Day 2 activities. It also allows for me to individually assess you for the Food Day 2 activities.

Please write a short essay answering the questions:                                                      

1.    What did your group at Food Day 2 accomplish, decide or present?

2.    What did I learn about the problem of feeding a growing world population?

3.    How was my learning on this issue affected by the activities at Food Day 2?

Grading

The essay is worth 20 points

1.    Answered all 3 questions thoughtfully. (15 points)

2.    Good spelling and grammar. (5 points)
